Free Fire is a 2016 British action comedy film directed by Ben Wheatley, from a screenplay by Wheatley and Amy Jump. It stars Brie Larson, Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Jack Reynor.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2016.[2] The film will serve as the closer of the 2016 BFI London Film Festival on 16 October 2016.[3] The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on 17 March 2017 by A24, and in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2017 by StudioCanal UK.

Premise

When a gang of criminals meet up in a warehouse in order to purchase arms, a disagreement turns into a full-on shootout between the two parties making the transaction.

Cast

Production

In October 2014, Olivia Wilde, Luke Evans, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Smiley joined the cast of the film, with Ben Wheatley directing from a screenplay he wrote with Amy Jump. Wheatley and Andy Starke will produce under their Rock Films banner. Film4 Productions will produce and finance the film.[4] In April 2015, Brie Larson joined the cast of the film, replacing Wilde who had to drop out due to a schedule conflict.[5]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on June 8, 2015.[6][7] Production concluded on July 17, 2015.[8]

Release

In February 2015, it was announced that StudioCanal, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions had acquired distribution rights to the film in United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, Scandinavia, and Spain, respectively.[9] In November 2015, it was announced that Alchemy had acquired United States distribution rights to the film.[10] However, on March 10, 2016, in the wake of rumors of Alchemy's financial troubles, distribution of the film was acquired by A24.[11] The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and serve as the closing night film of the London Film Festival on October 16, 2016.[12] It will be released in the United States on 17 March 2017.[13] The film is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2017.[14]

Critical reception

Free Fire has received an 80% rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 30 reviews, with an average rating of 7/10. The site's consensus reads, "Free Fire aims squarely for genre thrills, and hits its target repeatedly and with great gusto – albeit with something less than pure cinematic grace."[15] On Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average to reviews, the film has a score of 64 out of 100, based on 13 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[16]
