Finlay Christie (born 19 September 1994) is a Scottish-born rugby union player who currently plays as a halfback for Tasman in New Zealand's domestic Mitre 10 Cup and for the Chiefs in the international Super Rugby competition.[1][2][3]

Youth Career

Christie was born in Scotland, but emigrated to New Zealand aged 7 and settled down in the city of Pukekohe where he shone both at gymnastics and rugby during his schooldays. He eventually chose to pursue a rugby career and represented Counties Manukau at under-19 level before heading south to Christchurch for university. This decision started to pay off in 2016 when he was awarded the Hawkins Medal as Canterbury's top club rugby player for his performances for the University of Canterbury.[4]

Senior Career

Christie's performances at club level saw him offered a contract by Mitre 10 Cup premiership side, the Tasman Makos in 2016 and he immediately shone. Rotating the starting number 9 duties with the more experienced Billy Guyton, Christie made 10 appearances and scored one try as the Makos reached the Premiership final before going down to a strong Canterbury side.[5]

Super Rugby

His impressive first season at provincial level meant that it came as no surprise when he landed a Super Rugby contract with the Chiefs ahead of the 2017 Super Rugby season.[1]
