Faculty of Social Sciences,is a faculty in the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Social science. It was founded in 1971.[1]

History

Faculty of Social Sciences was a part of the Faculty of Arts from 1916 to 1971. In 1971, the faculty was bifurcated from the Arts Faculty and five departments were created with the aim to create landmark impacts with the help of the rigorous exercises done by the Sociologists, Psychologists, Economists, Political Scientists and Historians[1]

Organisation

Faculty of Social Sciences' administrative head is a dean. The dean is responsible for all aspects of the Faculty's operations, including budgets, administration, planning, support services, faculty appointments, curricula and student affairs. The dean is appointed by and reports to the Vice-Chancellor of the university.

There are five different departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences that offer Special courses, Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) degrees.[1][2]

Other then the departments, there are five centres which carries study on various fields.They are:

  • Centre for the Study of Nepal - Headed by Prof. Bhupendra Vikram Singh
  • Centre for Women's Study and Development - Headed by Prof. Kiran Barman
  • Centre for Integrated Rural Development - Headed by Prof. Chandrakala Padia
  • Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusion Policy- Headed by Prof. Tej Pratap Singh
  • Malviya Centre for Peace Research - Headed by Prof. Priyankar Upadhyay

Faculty of Social Science also hold "Babu Jagjivan Ram Chair for Social Research".

Courses

The faculty offers;

Special Courses- Faculty of Social also offer some special courses other than its Traditional Course Framework which are :-

1. Master of Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (MPMIR) under Department of Psychology

2. Master of Arts in Public Administration (MPA) under Department of Political Science

3. Master of Arts in Social Work (MSW) under Department of Sociology

4. One Year PG Diploma in Japanese Studies under Centre for the Study of Nepal

5. One Year PG Diploma in Conflict Management & Development (CMD) under Malaviya Centre for Peace Research

6.MA in Conflict Management and Development

7.PG Diploma in Conflict Management and Development .

All courses follow the semester system in which undergraduate courses have six semesters and post graduate courses have four semesters
