Essential Music & Marketing was founded in 2003 and operates as part of the Cooking Vinyl Group.[1] Based in Acton, London, the company is an independent provider of physical and digital sales and marketing and label services for music artists and record labels.[2]

History

Essential was established in 2003 by former Vital Distribution managing director Mike Chadwick, who heads the company, and Cooking Vinyl managing director Martin Goldschmidt. Initially launched to help US labels market and distribute their releases in Europe, today Essential provides a comprehensive service incorporating all aspects of releasing records.[3] As well as physical and digital sales and marketing this includes end-to-end product management, third party licensing and sync, building D2C stores, social media and online sales data analytics, manufacturing, registrations (OCC, ISRC etc.), neighbouring rights administration and commissioning remixes.[4]

Over the years Essential has provided services to a wide range of artists from Duran Duran, Faithless, and Scroobius Pip, through to Ghetts, Paul Buchanan and Adam Ant, as well as a variety of labels. Their label roster includes, Kanine Records, Double Denim, Mexican Summer, Lojinx, FatCat, Sexbeat, Loose, Lex, Nettwerk Records, Stones Throw, Innovative Leisure, Cherry Red, Pink Mist, Vagrant, Cooking Vinyl, Thirty Tigers, Tru Thoughts, Megaforce Records, Tummy Touch, R&S Records and Razor & Tie.

In 2013 the company scored its first platinum hit single with ‘Let Her Go’ by Passenger, which peaked at #2 in the UK charts. The single also hit #1 in Ireland’s IRMA charts, with the album All the Little Lights, from which the single is taken, reached #2. Essential provided distribution and marketing services for the release in the UK and Ireland under a deal with Canadian indie label Nettwerk.[5]

Essential also works directly with artists such as Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Released in January 2014 on EBGB's, Bextor’s new album Wanderlust was delivered via Essential on a services basis.[6] The campaign was hugely successful with the album peaking at number four on the UK Albums Chart and was the first record of 2014 to achieve three consecutive weeks inside the UK Top 10.[7]

In May 2014 the company announced a global product management deal with Tinchy Stryder covering future releases including forthcoming new album 360˚, due to be released through his imprint Cloud 9. Under this agreement Essential will provide a complete suite of label services including project management, marketing, digital marketing, plugging and PR, distribution and coordination of international release activity, working closely with Stryder’s management.[8]
