The move towards merging the two school systems was approved by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1967.[2] The separate school systems of Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County completed their merger in 1969.[3]

The school system currently resides in the North Carolina State Board of Education's First District.[6]

The seven members of the Board of Education generally meet on the last Monday of each month. The current members of the board are: Barry Overman (Chair); Glenda Griffin (Vice-Chair); Harvey Beasley, Sr.; Hank Krebs; Walter B. Jolly; Erskine E. Morgan, II; and Allison Wills.[7]

Superintendent

The current superintendent of the system is Linwood Williams. He took over as acting superintendent in 2009 after the death of superintendent Tony Stewart.[8] and then was hired as the permanent superintendent in July of that year. Williams was previously the assistant superintendent for the ECPPS system.[9]
