Edward Joseph Weisenburger, J.C.L., is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church serving as the eleventh bishop of the Diocese of Salina, Kansas since 2012.

Biography

Early life and education

Weisenburger was born in Alton, Illinois on December 23, 1960 and grew up primarily in Lawton, Oklahoma, although he spent two years of his childhood in Hays, Kansas. In Lawton, he attended St. Barbara's Catholic Church which closed and reopened in 1978 at a new location in Lawton under the new name of Holy Family Catholic Church. He graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1979. He graduated with honors from Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri in 1983. He then attended the American College Seminary at the Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium. He graduated with honors, earning the Pontifical S.T.B. in Theology along with an M.A. in Religious Studies in 1986, and a Masters in Moral and Religious Sciences in 1987.

Ordination and ministry

Weisenburger was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City on December 19, 1987. He also earned a Licentiate of Canon Law degree from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada in 1992. Prior to being appointed bishop, he was vicar general of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City from 1996 to 2012 and rector of the cathedral from 2002 to 2012. On October 2, 2009, he was appointed a Prelate of Honor to Pope Benedict XVI, with the title reverend monsignor. Prior to his consecration, the Diocese of Salina was without a bishop for a year and a half.[1]

He was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on February 6, 2012 and consecrated on May 1, 2012 in the Sacred Heart Cathedral.[2]
