EUobserver is an independent online newspaper established in Brussels in 2000. It is financially and editorially independent of the EU institutions. EUobserver's team of journalists file daily news reports from the EU capital and do in-depth investigations on topics of special interest. EUobserver values free thinking and plain speech. It aims to support European democracy by giving people the information they need to hold the EU establishment to account.
History
Established in 2000, EUobserver claims to be the largest online daily news site focused on the EU. Upon launch, EUobserver claimed to be published in cooperation with the Group for a Europe of Democracies and Diversities, a Eurosceptic group of parties that later became the Independence/Democracy group.[1] It has over 60,000 daily readers and is the second most read EU-related news source used by journalists after the Financial Times.[2][3]
The website's editor-in-chief is Lisbeth Kirk, Danish journalist, the wife of Jens-Peter Bonde, a former Danish Member of the European Parliament who used to co-chair the Independence and Democracy group of eurocritical MEPs in the European Parliament.
Reputation
Veronika Szente Goldston, Human Rights Watch’s advocacy director for Europe and central Asia has said of the paper: "EUobserver has the most in-your-face journalists in Brussels."
