The Directorate General for Public Security (Generaldirektion für die öffentliche Sicherheit, "GDföS") is a department of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior that oversees various departments responsible for public security. The department is overseen by the General Director for Public Security, who reports to and is appointed by the Austrian Federal Minister for the Interior.
The GDföS offices are located on Minoritenplatz in Vienna.
Organization
The legal basis for the General Directorate for Public Security is paragraph 6 of the Sicherheitspolizeigesetz ("Federal Security Police Act"). Several law enforcement agencies that are not part of the Federal Police are subordinated to the General Directorate:
- Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz und Terrorismusbekämfpung (BK): Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism
- Bundeskriminalamt (BK): Federal Criminal Police Office
- Bundespolizei: Federal Police Service
- Einsatzkommando Cobra (EKO Cobra): Federal SWAT and special forces unit
- Flugpolizei: Air Police
- Sondereinheit für Observation (SEO): Special Unit for Covered Technical Surveillance
