Dilip Dandekar was the chairman and managing director of Kokuyo Camlin Ltd.,[1] taking office from June 1, 2002.[2] He joined Camlin Ltd. as ‘management trainee’[1] under his father, D. P. Dandekar and uncle, G. P. Dandekar,[3] who were the founders of the company (initially known as Dandekar and Co.).

Dandekar currently serves as the President of Indian Merchants' Chambers.[1] He is presently the chairman of Kokuyo Camlin Ltd., and Camlin Fine Sciences.[2]

Early life

Dandekar was born the son of Digambar Dandekar,[1] co-founder of Camlin Ltd. and member of the entrepreneurial and aristocratic, Chitpavan brahmin[4] Dandekar family.[3] Dandekar's uncle, G. P. Dandekar was the other co-founder of the company.[3] Dandekar has one older brother, Subhash[2] who served as executive chairman of Camlin until his retirement in 2002.[2]

Dandekar was married to Anjali Dandekar (née Gogte), and they had 3 children together: Aditi, Ketki and Rahul; before her death in 1993.[3] All three of them had an equal stake of 1.89% in the company through a transfer of shares before exiting as stake holders between 2013 and 2016.[3] Dandekar's son, Rahul had joined the business as a management trainee in the sales and production department in 2010 before he split from the family business for his independent venture.[3] Dandekar's daughter, Aditi, looks after pre-school chain Camlin Alpha Kids Limited.[5]

Dandekar later remarried Smita Dandekar (née Karandikar) in 1998. She has one daughter from her previous marriage.[3]

Dandekar is also a known 1st cousin-in-law to the late business magnate Dnyaneshwar Agashe because of the families having well documented pedigrees.[6][7] Dandekar's own wife and Agashe's wife being first cousins.[6][7]

Career

Dandekar joined Camlin Ltd. as 'management trainee'[1] and became executive director of the company in 1979.[1] He took charge chairman and managing director from June 1, 2002.[2] This was following the retirement of his brother, Subhash Dandekar, from the post of Executive Chairman after a period of 43 years at the helm.[2] Dandekar served as a Vice President of Indian Merchants' Chambers[1] and now serves as the Non Executive Chairman of Camlin Fine Sciences Ltd. (formerly, Camlin Fine Chemicals Ltd) and has been its Director since June 2006.[1] Dandekar served as a Joint Managing Director of Kokuyo Camlin Limited. from June 1, 2002 to February 1, 2013.[1]

He has been the Chairman of Kokuyo Camlin Limited since June 1, 2002.[1] Under him, as of April, 2005,[2] Camlin has restricted the operations of its Pharmaceutical Division, only to oncology products and thus, it has now practically only two Divisions viz. Consumer Products Division and Fine Chemical Division.[2]

Dandekar is also Director of various other prestigious companies such as Indo Schottle Auto Parts Pvt. Ltd., Nilmac Packaging Industries Ltd. and Camlin International Ltd.[2] He is a member of the executive committee of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is the President of Indian Merchants’ Chamber and on the governing board of Bombay First and the ICFAI Business School.[2]

As of 2010, Dandekar’s holding in the company stands at 4.33%.[3] The Dandekar family owns 38.44% of the company, which had a revenue of Rs. 330.69 crore in the 2009-10 fiscal.[3]

In May 2011, Kokuyo S&T Company Ltd,[8] a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan’s Kokuyo Company Ltd acquired a controlling stake in Camlin Ltd from the Dandekars. The name of the company was changed to Kokuyo Camlin Ltd.[5][8] Kokuyo Co will picked up 50.3% in Camlin, for Rs 366 crore, in a deal which was executed in three tranches.[8]

In 2014, Kokuyo Camlin sold the pre-school chain Alpha Kids to the Dandekars. which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Kokuyo Camlin Ltd, for an undisclosed amount.[5] Dandekar continued as chairman and managing director and nephew, Shriram Dandekar continued as executive director of the company.
