Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (名探偵コナン 純黒の悪夢 Meitantei Konan: Junkoku no Naitomea) is a 2016 Japanese animated film. It is the twentieth installment of the Case Closed film series based on the manga series of the same name, following the 2015 film Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno. The film was released on April 16, 2016.[2]

Plot

A Black Organization spy, codenamed Curaçao, infiltrated the NPA Security Bureau Office, stealing the NOC list of MI6, BND, CSIS, FBI and CIA agents working undercover in the Black Organization. Yuya Kazami and Rei Furuya attempted to stop her escape and later engaged in a car chase on the Rainbow Bridge, with Shuichi Akai joining later. The car chase ended in a havoc, and Akai decided to shoot the tire of Curaçao vehicle, causing the car to crash and Curaçao drowned. She later surfaced at Touto Aquarium near the crash site.

The next day, the Detective Boys discovered Curaçao at Touto Aquarium. She suffered amnesia and her phone was broken as a result of the car crash the day prior. Conan retrieved the broken phone and take photos of Curaçao, then hand the phone to Dr. Agasa for recovery of data and the photo to Ran, who, in turn, turns them to Tokyo Metropolitan Police. The Detective Boys then decided to stay with Curaçao to help her regain the memory. After noticing the perfect darting skill and her swift act saving Genta from falling from high places, Haibara and Conan seems to believe that Curaçao is not an ordinary woman, and Haibara herself has a sense that Curaçao is likely to be another Black Organization agent. Meanwhile, Dr. Agasa attempted to recover the message from Curaçao's broken cell phone, and found out that Curaçao attempted to send the name of known NOC agent (Stout, Aquavit, Riesling, Bourbon/Furuya, and Kir/Hondo Hidemi) to the organization. Stout, Aquavit, Riesling were later killed by members of the Black Organization in London, Toronto and Berlin, respectively, and Furuya and Hidemi were held hostage in Tokyo. Curaçao also screamed the name of those NOC agent in front of the Detective Boys when the ferris wheel reached the top.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police later come and took Curaçao into custody, transferring her to the Police Hospital, but they were forced to surrender her to the Public Security Bureau as the Bureau believed Curaçao was the spy infiltrating the Bureau Office the day before. The Public Security Bureau, having become aware that Curaçao appears to react to certain event in Touto Aquarium, take her back to the Aquarium. The same night, the Black Organization, who arrived by the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, knocked down the power of the ferris wheel and planned to intercept Curaçao when the ferris reached the top position. After Curaçao regained her memory by looking at the specific color pattern of projected lights, she knocked unconscious Yuya Kazami, who boarded the ferris wheel with her, and escape. The Black Organization attempted to detonate the bomb planted at the ferris wheel, but the bomb was disarmed by Furuya; they instead fire from the V-22, trying to kill Curaçao and destabilize the wheel to roll it. Akai, with the help of Conan and Furuya, was able to shoot down the V-22, and Conan attempted to stop the rolling wheel before it crushes to the aquarium. Curaçao, having noticed that the Detective Boys are in the rolling ferris wheel, crash a crane truck into the wheel, stopping it and saving the Detective Boys but causing the ferris wheel to crush to her death. With Curaçao admitting that the mail tampered by Dr. Agasa and sent from her broken cell phone that reads "Bourbon and Kir are clean" was sent by her own, the two were able to maintain their cover in the Black Organization.

The film was number-one in its first weekend with US$11.1 million in gross and 934,000 admissions.[4] With US$47 million during its three-week run, it broke the record held by previous film Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno, becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise.[5] The film was released in China on November 25, 2016 and has grossed CN¥26.4 million in the country.[6]
