Design World is a US trade magazine headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio with print and online issues covering topics in the field of OEM design engineering. Topics covered include aerospace, food & beverage, medical equipment, military, packaging, semiconductor, machine tool, energy, material handling, motion control, additive manufacturing and robotics.[1]

Design World publishes 12 print editions yearly and is sent to a BPA-audited circulation of 40,000 OEM design engineers.[2] Design World has always been mailed free of charge to subscribers in the US but allow international subscribers to pay for subscriptions to be mailed abroad. Design World is offered in a digital format sent to 100,000 subscribers.[3]

The magazine is organized and divided into ten departments including: Insights, Engineering Exchange, Design for Industry, Design Notes, CAE Solutions, Coupling Notes, Product World, Ad Index and the newest additions; Green Engineering and Internet of Things. Throughout the year Design World also publishes special issues and handbooks covering topics such as motion control, robotics, bearings, sensors, fluid power and aerospace.

History

Design World is owned and managed by the publishing company, WTWH Media, originally headquartered in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. The first Design World editorial team started on September 1, 2006 with the first issue of Design World published in October 2006.[4]

In 2007 Design World created a special issue called Leadership in Engineering published every January. This issue nominates inventors, specific departments or companies exemplifying leadership in the engineering field.[3]

Editors

The editors of Design World contribute to both print and online. Design World also has guest editors who contribute blogs and articles in addition to the list of editors below:

Editorial Director
Paul J. Heney, the Editorial Director for Design World magazine, was hired in 2010. Heney holds leadership roles on the national board of the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) and Trade, Association and Business Publications International (TABPI).

Executive Editor
Leland (Lee) Teschler worked at Penton Media for 37 years, starting in 1977 as a Staff Editor for Machine Design to Chief Editor of the publication in 2006. Prior to that, he was a communications engineer for the federal government.

Managing Editor
Leslie Langue began working with “Design World” in 2006. She functions as the managing editor of Design World magazine. Leslie runs the Make Parts Fast website, and contributes content to Design World, Fluid Power World, Motion Control Tips, Linear Motion Tips and others to be named later.

Senior Editors
Miles Budimir is a senior editor covering motion control. He holds a BSEE and has experience working in the test and measurement and controls industry. Miles writes for Motion Control Tips and Linear Control Tips.

Barb Schmitz was hired in November. She writes for 3D CAD World and Design World. Barb has worked as an editor for several magazines in the technology market for over 20 years and has written extensively on CAD, CAM, and CAE technologies.

Mary Gannon covers a range of industrial topics, including motion control, power transmission and fluid power.

Assistant Editor
Michael Jermann graduated from Kent State University in 2013 with a BS in news media. After working as an intern, he was hired by WTWH Media as an assistant editor. He now covers a wide range of engineering topics including, 3D printing, bearings and fluid power.

Aimee Kalnoskas is a technical communications specialist with experience in electronics and publishing operations, as well as traditional and online communications, content development, and marketing. She most recently served as the Editor-in-Chief of an online community for buyers in the electronic components space to connect, collaborate, learn, and find parts.

Copy Editor
Michelle DiFrangia is the final line copy editor for all of WTWH Media's print publications.

Awards and Honors

In 2008 and 2009 Design World was selected as a winner in the APEX Awards for Publication Excellence for best new design and layout.[5]

In 2009 Design World won an ASBPF Regional Design Award for business circulations under 80,000.[5]

WTWH Media LLC

WTWH Media was co-founded by Scott McCafferty and Mike Emich in 2006. WTWH Media owns and operates 5 print magazines including Design World, Windpower Engineering and Development, Solar Power World, Fluid Power World and Medical Design and Outsourcing. WTWH Media publishes over 30 different websites serving professionals in design engineering, renewable energy, fluid power, medical and robotics.
