Decepticons (gang)

Decepticons or Decepts or Hammer Gang were a 1980s street gang based in Brooklyn, New York named after the villains in the Transformers franchise, the Decepticons.[1]

The Decepticons were founded in 1985 at Brooklyn Technical High School. At one point in the 1980s, the Decepticons were the largest gang in New York City.[1]

Five Decepticons were arrested on a violent attack they committed. In 1988 the Decepticons were charged with 43 robberies, mostly of jewelry and clothing.[2] Female members of the gang were known as Deceptinettes.[3] Their ages varied from 15 to 22.[2] Despite the fact that the gang consisted of fewer than 60 members, their presence in New York City was described as mythical.[2]

Terminology

Brooklyn was referred to as Cybertron (the place of its founding).[4]
