Death and the Maiden (motif)

Hans Baldung Grien, Der Tod und das Mädchen, 1517

Death and the Maiden was a common motif in Renaissance art, especially in painting and music. It developed from the Dance of Death, with an added erotic subtext. German artist Hans Baldung Grien depicted it several times in his paintings.

The motif was revived during the romantic era in the arts, a notable example being composer Franz Schubert's song "Der Tod und das Mädchen".
