Death Note: Light Up the New World (デスノート Light up the NEW world, Desu Nōto Light up the NEW world) is a 2016 Japanese film directed by Shinsuke Sato. The film is based on the manga series Death Note written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata and is a sequel to Death Note 2: The Last Name (2006). It premiered in Japan on October 29, 2016, by Warner Bros.^[1][2]

The film opened on 342 screens and sold 342,309 tickets, earning 458,645,800 yen (about US$4.37 million) during its opening weekend.^[3]

Plot

The Death Note is a supernatural notebook that grants its user the power to kill by writing the desired person's name on its pages. Set ten years after the events of the previous films, in 2016 where society is afflicted with cyber-terrorism. Six different death notes fall to the human world, the maximum number of notes that can exist there at once. In the midst of this, two new individuals inherit the DNA of Light Yagami and L must play the deadly game of cat-and-mouse once again. There are new Death Note murders after a 10-year hiatus. Mass murders caused by the Death Note takes place on wall in U.S., Shibuya in Japan and other places. Following in the late Soichiro Yagami's footsteps, Tsukuru Mishima leads the Death Note Task Force to secure all six death notes. Ryuzaki, the original successor of L, is also investigating. He promises to L, that he will never use the Death Note. Yuki Shien is a cyber-terrorist who worships Kira. He uses his exceptional hacking abilities to search for the Death Notes. A white shinigami named Arma visits the human world. A computer virus called Kira, spreads in the world. A message in Kira virus says to turn in 6 Death Notes. The confrontation begins over the 6 notes starts between Tsukuru, Ryūzaki and Yūki.

• Eiichiro Funakoshi as Kenichi Mikuriya,^[6] a Supreme Court Justice in possession of a Death Note.
• Miyuki Sawashiro as Arma (voice), a white female shinigami, created based on Sidoh's design.
• Kenichi Matsuyama as L,^[7] was the greatest detective in the world, who captured the main Kira.
• Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami,^[8] otherwise known as "Kira", a serial killer of criminals and former death note holder.

Production

As of February 2016 principal photography was taking place outside Japan.^[1]

The theme song "Dear Diary" and the insert song "Fighter" is performed by Namie Amuro.^[9]

Miniseries

A three-part miniseries entitled Death Note: New Generation was announced as a part of the Death Note live-action film series. It bridges the 10-year gap between the previous films and the 2016 film.^[10][11][12]
