Daniel Bauer (born 1976) is a German make-up artist based in India. He is most known for working with A-list celebrities in Bollywood[1] and for working as a makeup artist with fashion magazines including Vogue India, Elle India, and Harper’s Bazar.[2][3]

Early life

Bauer was born in Perth, Australia and raised in Germany. His mother was Indian/Thai and his father was German.[4]

Career

After graduating from high school in Germany, Bauer went on to study psychiatric nursing. While working as a psychiatric nurse he started classes at the Rosemary Schneider Makeup School.[4] For the next year Bauer studied nursing at night and makeup during the day. Subsequently, he finished his nursing studies and took up hair and make-up full time. In 2005 Bauer moved to Sydney to further his career. After an assignment in India in 2008, he began working in India full-time.[4][1]

Bauer has completed over a 150 fashion magazine covers while working in India[2] and has worked with several A-list celebrities from Bollywood including Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra,[5] Deepika Padukone,[2] Parineeti Chopra,[6] Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,[7] and Kareena Kapoor[8]

While recommending him for Bridal make-up, Vogue India wrote that “Bauer subtly accents and enhances the features of the bride, and instead of the boring old updo, he likes to add volume to bring in what he calls a Western twist.[9]

Bauer was appointed Indian makeup expert for Lakmé Cosmetics in 2012[10][11] and was also appointed hair expert for Tresemme in April 2014.

Awards

In July 2015, Vogue India named Daniel Bauer as the best makeup artist of the year. In July 2016 Grazia India named Daniel Bauer as one of the 100 most influential people in fashion. In November 2016 Elle_(India) named Daniel Bauer as one of the best hair and makeup artists in India

Controversy

In July 2014, the Cine Costume, Hair & Makeup Association protested the shooting of the movie Phantom because Bauer was a foreign makeup artist who was not a member of the Union. Bauer was working on makeup for the female lead, Katrina Kaif.[12][13]
