Cheranmahadevi is a panchayat town in Tirunelveli district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Cheranmahadevi is located on the right side bank of the river Thamirabarani.

Temples

Cheranmahadevi has numerous temples located in it.

The Ammanatha Swamy temple is one of the Nava Kailasam temples.This is an ancient Shiva temple.Brairava in this temple doesn't have dog with him[1]

Vaidhyanatha swamy temple of Cheranmadevi is an another ancient Shiva temple.This temple's Maha mandabam was built by sadaavarma thiripuvana chakravarthy Kulasekaran on the year 1322.[1]

It has got a central government controlled archaeological temple named Bakthavachala vishnu temple which is considered to be a monument for its medieval carvings referring to the period of chola and pandiya kings.The temple was built in the year 1012-1044 A.D and devotees are allowed to worship on the day called vidhivadha.

History

In tenth century by the Chozha time this place was called Nigaril sathurvedimangalam. Sri maravallaba king's second son paranthakan married the Chera kingdom's princess Vanavan mahadevi.And he kept his wife's name for this place.Till now that name (Cheranmahadevi) only used.[1]

Canals and administration

Canadian canal is first such canal in Thamirabarani river, now the existing one is the third such canal according to report.Cheranmahadevi was under the control of Ambai thaluk and Tirunelveli district. Cheranmahadevi is about 20 km from Tirunelveli either side i.e. bus route and train route.Nagerkovil, Tirunelveli, and tenkasi routes are available from here. And then in cheranmahadevi a sub collector office is located which was under the main control of Ambasamudram.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Cheranmahadevi had a population of 16,320. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Cheranmahadevi has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 83% and female literacy of 71%. 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Politics

Cheranmahadevi assembly constituency is part of Tiruchendur Lok Sabha constituency.[3]
