Chah Ab District is a district of Takhar Province, Afghanistan.

Location

Chah Ab is the fourth largest district of Takhar province and is located in the northeast of Afghanistan.

Demographics

It is estimated that around 100,000 people are now living in Chah Ab, district with 20,000 in Chah Ab town. Before the war, Chah Ab was a calm and undeveloped district with a small number of educated civilians among its pre-war population. Education in Chah Ab has suffered as a result of the war and the economic deterioration over the past 23 years. Government authorities are not in a position to provide any incentives or salaries to the teachers in the district.

Economy

Farming and livestock are the main economic activities of the area. The main agricultural crops grown are wheat, barley, flax, chickpea and sesame. Farmers concentrate their efforts on the vegetables and farm products which require minimal water resources. The main fruits are apples, pears, grapes, almonds, walnuts, apricots, cherries and mulberries.

Local skills include blacksmiths, carpenters, goldsmiths, leather processors, leather workers and tailors. Women are involved in embroidery, carpet weaving, poultry farming and livestock rearing.
