The Central University of Karnataka (CUK) was established by an Act of the Parliament (No. 3 of 2009) at kadaganchi of aland taluk Gulbarga, Karnataka. It is one of the 16 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan Period to address to the concerns of ‘equity and access’ and to increase the access to quality higher education to people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate Enrolment Ratio of less than the national average of 11%.

The CUK, with its territorial jurisdiction all over Karnataka, initiated its activities from the academic year beginning August 2009 in keeping with the philosophy of achieving and maintaining the highest levels of academic excellence, sensitivity to equity and access in enrolment and recruitment and emerging as a premier national educational and research institution in the country.

650 acres of land at Kadaganchi Suntanur villages on the Gulbarga-Waghdhari Inter-State Highway in Aland taluka identified by the Karnataka State Government has been handed over to the university, where the work of construction of boundary wall has been completed and many buildings including the admin block have started functioning. Other school buildings have started functioning.

History

Central University of Karnataka in Gulbarga of Karnataka, India has been established through an Act of Parliament: “The Central Universities Act, 2009" by Govt. of India.[1]

The university has started operating from its permanent campus at the Gulbarga-Waghdhari Inter-State Highway in Aland taluka identified by the Karnataka State Government.[2]

The Central Universities Bill 2009 aims at creating one new central university each in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.[3] It also seeks to convert Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya in Chhattisgarh, Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in Uttarakhand into Central universities.[4]

School of Business Studies

The School of Business Studies offers courses in Business Studies, Commerce and Economic Studies and Planning. The school offers postgraduate and PhD courses in Business Studies, Commerce and Economic Studies. Prof M.V. Alagawadi is the dean. The School of Business Studies has following departments:

Department of Business Studies

Department of Business Studies offers courses in management and a postgraduate degree in management, i.e., MBA. The department offers PhD program in management course. Prof M.V. Algawadi is the head of the department.

Department of Commerce

Department of Commerce offers courses in Commerce stream. It offers postgraduate degree in commerce (M.Com) and PhD programs. Dr K. Padamasree is the head of department.

Department of Economic Studies and Planning

The Department of Economic Studies and Planning offers courses in Economics. Students can opt for an postgraduate degree in Economics or they can go for PhDs. Prof Pushpa M. Savadatti is the head of the department.

School of Earth Sciences

School of Earth Sciences teaches in the areas of Geography and Geology. It provides postgraduate degree and PhD in Geography and Geology. Dr.Sulochana Shekhar is the dean. The School of Earth Sciences has the following departments:

Department of Geography

Department of Geography offers Masters of Science degree in Applied Geography and Geo-informatics. The department offers PhD program in Geography. Dr Sulochana Shekhar is the head of the department.

Department of Geology

The Department of Geology offers postgraduate degree courses in Applied Geology and Geo-informatics. Department of Geology offers PhD program for the students in the field of Geology. Dr. Mohammed Aslam is the head of the department.

School of Humanities and Languages

The School of Humanities and Languages provides courses in Language and Literature. It offers postgraduate and PhD awards in the field of Languages and literature. Prof. N. Nagaraju is the dean. The school consists of the following departments and one center for classical language.

Department of Kannada Literature and Culture

The department of Kannada Literature and Culture offers students postgraduate courses in the field of Kannada Literature and Culture. The Department also offers PhD programs in Kannada Literature and Culture. Dr. Shivaganga Ruma is the head of the department.

Department of English

Department of English provides courses in English Literature. The Department of English offers both postgraduate degree in English Literature and allows students to take research in the field of English Literature. Dr. Basavaraj P. Donur is the head of the department.

Department of Hindi

The Department of Hindi offers courses in Hindi Language. The Department offers Masters of Arts degree in Hindi and the department PhD program in Hindi language. Prof. Sunitha Anil Manjanbail is the head of the department of Hindi.

Center for Classical Language-Kannada

The Center for Classical Language offers students advanced studies in Kannada Language and Literature. Prof B. Mallikarjun is the director of the Center for Classical Language-Kannada.

School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences provides courses in the field of History, Psychology and Social Work. The school offers postgraduate degrees and PhDs in Psychology, History and Social Work.

Department of History

The Department of History offers to students only PhD awards in the field of History. Prof. S. Chandrashekar is the head of the department.

Department of Psychology

School of Social and Behavioural Science Batch 2015-16

Department of Psychology provides students Masters of Science degree in Psychology and Integrated M.Sc. in Psychology. The Department also offers Ph.D. program in the field of Psychology. Dr. Romate John is the Head of the Department of Psychology. Other Assistant Professors are Mr. Mamman Joseph, Dr. Jeyavel S and Dr. Vijyendra Pandey [5]

Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work provides only master's degree in Social Work. Dr Channaveer R.M is the head of the department.

The School of Undergraduate Studies provides courses both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Prof S. Chandrashekar is the dean. The school provides five integrated courses with exit option after three years with award of UG degree or five years with award of UG and PG degrees. The school consist of following courses:

Department of Physics

Department of Physics offers students Masters of Science degree in Physics and an Integrated BSc-MSc dual degree. Apart from these two courses, the Department also offers PhD in Physics.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics provides Masters of Science degree in Mathematics. Also PhD in Mathematics.

School of Engineering

Tech-Integrated Engineering with limited specialization through stream Electives Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Computer Science. The course provides a solid foundation in fundamentals of science and technology; develop a scientific temper and spirit,instill professional ethics and fulfill the needs of society. The course highlights are the exit after B Tech, 4 years and Internship in all summers. The candidates who secure a minimum of CGPA 6.5 in B.Tech can pursue M.Tech with the option to leave Engineering Program and chose other science programs of CUK through credit transfer. Limited option for lateral entry from other disciplines.

Department of Chemical Engineering

Department of Chemical Engineering offers B.Tech and M.Tech in Chemical Engineering. The students can pursue M.Tech degree soon after completion of B.Tech degree.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department of Mechanical Engineering provides BE degree and M.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Department of Electronic Engineering

Department of Electronic Engineering offers B.Tech and M.Tech degree in the field of Electronic Engineering

Department of Electronic Communication Engineering

Department of Electronic Communication Engineering offers B.Tech and M.Tech degree in Electronic Communication Engineering.
