Cavotec is an international engineering group, headquartered in Lugano, Switzerland.

Cavotec supplies the ports and maritime, airports, mining and tunnelling, and general industry sectors with power transmission, distribution and control technologies that form the link between fixed installations, in airports, ports and mines, and mobile equipment such as aircraft, ships, mining equipment and cranes.[2]

Cavotec’s business concept is to design, engineer and sell innovative products and systems designed to enable industries to improve efficiency, profitability, productivity and environmental sustainability.

All engineering and most manufacturing of Cavotec’s products and systems takes place at nine specialised engineering Centres of Excellence in Germany (three), Sweden, Norway, Italy, the United States (two) and New Zealand.

Cavotec listed on the NASDAQ OMX Stockholm stock exchange on October 19, 2011.[3]

Ports and Maritime

Cavotec designs, manufactures and supplies Moormaster™, a vacuum-based mooring technology that eliminates the need for conventional mooring lines. Remote-controlled vacuum pads recessed in, or mounted on, the quayside, moor and release vessels in seconds.

Cavotec produces Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) shore-to-ship power systems designed to enable ships to switch off their engines and plug into shore-side electricity in an effort to reduce emissions from ships' auxiliary diesel engines when in port.

Other products include Marine Propulsion Systems (MPS), cable reels and crane controllers for RTGs, Motorised Cable Reels for horizontal and vertical use power cranes at ports, Panzerbelt - a patented cable protection system that protects the cables powering ship-to-shore cranes and comprehensive range of collector columns (sliprings) that supply electrical power and signalling.

Cavotec's customers in the port and maritime sector are primarily global OEMs and major port authorities, shipping companies and general contractors. OEM customers in this market segment include ABB, Aker, APMT, Cargotec, China Harbour Engineering, Dalian Huarai, DP World, Eurogate, Konecranes, MSC National Oilwell Varco, Odim, PSA, SLSMC, Statoil and ZPMC.

Airports

Cavotec is a ground support equipment (GSE) integrator for the global airports sector. Cavotec develops GSE systems - including fuel, water and power supply units- tunnel systems, pre-conditioned air units (PCAir), aircraft connectors and caddies designed to help airlines and airports to reduce tarmac congestion, improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Cavotec's range of power conversion products for the aviation industry includes Solid State Frequency Converters (SSFC), Mobile Solid State Frequency Converters, 400 Hz Motor Generators (MG) and 400 Hz Diesel Aircraft Ground Power Units (GPU).

Cavotec supplies Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) systems designed to cool aircraft either with a point-of-use (direct expansion) or a centralised system. PCA units can be fixed or mobile, ground or PBB-mounted and rated for either 50 or 60 Hz input power.

The Cavotec PCAir System (mobile or fixed) provides pre-compressed air to cool the cabin of passenger aircraft during ground handling. The unit is driven by dry compressed air supplied from a centralised, electrically powered compressor room. The system works on “capacity on demand” which constantly adjusts the capacity to the current demand, thereby minimising overall energy consumption and noise pollution.

Cavotec's airport fuelling systems include Pantographs, Loading Arms, High Point / Low Point Pit Assembly pits, Commercial Fuel Hydrants, Vault Access Pit Covers and Fuel Isolation Valve Pit Assembly.

Cavotec's In-Ground Systems include a Tunnel System and Hatch Pits designed to provide access to service outlets, making servicing safer and more efficient with the actual service points rising above apron level. Hatch pits are rated Bridge Class F900 and are intended for indoor operation, outdoor operation, hangar or remote parking.

Cavotec's Above Ground Systems include Power Caddies - mobile GPUs designed to supply aircraft with 400 Hz power, Cable Coilers, 400 Hz/28VDC Aircraft Connectors and Tow Bars.

Customers are primarily public and private airports and airport authorities, aircraft manufacturers and general contractors. Customers include Anchorage Airport, Bahrain Airport, Boeing, Corporation, Cargolux, ClaVal, Dubai Airports, Emte Sistemas, Frankfurt Airport, Gamuda, Gatwick Airport, Heathrow Airport, Lufthansa, Munich Airport, New Delhi Airport, Oslo Airport, Shanghai Airport, Siemens and Saudi Oger.

Mining and Tunneling

Cavotec is a specialist supplier of mining and tunnelling equipment used at applications worldwide. The Group is a supplier of cables and hoses, motorised cable reels, power connectors, radio remote controls, radio remote controls receiver units and spring-driven cable reels, with long-standing relationships with major global mining groups such as Sandvik and Atlas Copco.

The cables offered by the Cavotec Group are divided in low and medium voltage. Low voltage cables are further divided into power or control cables as each single cable is designed to deal with specific applications. Medium voltage cables are power cables but the majority can be supplied with integrated fibre-optics as an option. Cavotec supplies any type of cable for specific application in either underground or open-pit mining applications. In addition, the Cavotec Group also supplies different types of hoses for the supply of water and air. These hoses are often used in mining and tunnelling operations where providing sufficient clean air and water is an absolute necessity.

Cavotec Alfo standard spring reels are built from modular components, which allow a great number of combinations. Each unit features a dimensioned shaft and bearings that accommodate an exchange of springs. The cable feeding point can be placed on either side of the drum allowing for adaptation for horizontal or vertical applications. The springs are made from steel and are mounted inside a housing in order to avoid friction and wear. The slipring assembly is mounted in a solid glass-fibre reinforced plastic housing which withstands corrosion and mechanical wear. Every unit meets all applicable IEC norms and standards and follows the latest EU requirements (CE-marking). All reels and sliprings have a protection grade of IP65/66.

Cavotec power connectors for low and high voltage applications feature a standard IP 66 protection and a standard maximum temperature of 80 °C. The range of low voltage power connectors are made in two different operation systems: the "Push & Pull" system, preferred when the connectors have to be disconnected manually or automatically several times a day, and the "Screw Ring" system has special connectors fitted with screw rings for applications with manual disconnections on a day-to-day or weekly basis. Cavotec power connectors provide a means of extending cables from fixed or mobile power sources to mining and tunnelling equipment. They are often used also for portable junction boxes either in above or underground applications.

General Industry

Cavotec supplies the general industry market with cable chains, cables, loading terminals, motorized cable reels, power connectors, radio remote controls, radio remote control receiver units, rotating electrical connectors, slipring columns, spring driven reels and surge control systems. The customer base is highly diversified with companies in various industries, including many international OEMs.

Centres of Excellence

Cavotec Alfo Meyerinck (Overath, Germany) was established in 1991. Cavotec Alfo specialises in the design and manufacturing of spring reels and slipring columns. Cavotec’s spring driven cable reels meet applicable IEC international standards and comply with EU-requirements (CE-marking). Cavotec Meyerinck was established in 1968. It supplies a wide range of fuelling systems, fluid and surge control, and loading terminal products for the aviation sectoras well as for the petrochemical and food beverage industries.

Cavotec Connectors (Staffanstorp, Sweden) was established in 1991. Cavotec Connectors’ electrical power, power supply, power cable and rotating power connector are found in ports and terminals, mining and tunnelling, railways, steel and aluminium plants, mobile generator sets, offshore and other mobile industrial machinery.

Cavotec Dabico (Cypress, CA, USA) was established in 1966. Cavotec Dabico specialises in the supply of custom in-ground fuel systems for aircraft. Cavotec’s experience extends back to when the first airport hydrant fuelling systems were designed and installed.

Cavotec Fladung (Dietzenbach, Germany) was established in 1968. Cavotec Fladung supplies airport ground support equipment and in-ground utility systems, such as pre-conditioned air, mobile caddies, aircraft cables, connectors and tow bars and cable coilers.

Cavotec INET (Cypress, CA, USA) was established in 1967. Cavotec INET is engaged in the Civil and Military Airports Ground Support Equipment sector, servicing aircraft as an engineering and manufacturing company of power conversion 50/60 Hz to 400 Hz systems, static transfer switches, Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS), specialised Group Power Units (GPU) and Pre-conditioned Air Systems. Cavotec INET is also the beneficiary of several certifications as a contractor for federal and local governments in USA. In October 2012 the board of directors of Cavotec SA initiated an investigation focusing on certain practices of two individuals at Cavotec's US-based INET operations.[4]

Cavotec Micro-control (Hell, Norway) was established in 1985. Cavotec Micro-control supplies a comprehensive range of radio remote control systems (RRCs) designed for applications in the offshore, mining and maritime sectors, as well as general and process industries.

Cavotec MoorMaster (Christchurch, New Zealand) was established in 1999. The Cavotec MoorMaster technical team consists of maritime personnel, naval architects and mechanical and electrical engineers who design and develop Cavotec’s vacuum-based, automated mooring system, MoorMaster™.

Cavotec Specimas (Nova Milanese, Italy) was established in 1963. Cavotec Specimas is a developer of motorised cable reel technology for the ports and maritime, mining and tunnelling and general industry sectors. Cavotec’s engineers design and manufacture the Group’s AMP systems, motorised cable reels, patented Panzerbelt cable protection system, power cables and electric marine propulsion sliprings.
