Carry On Again Doctor is the eighteenth in the series of Carry On films to be made. It was released in 1969 and was the third to feature a medical theme. The film features series regulars Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, Barbara Windsor and Hattie Jacques. This was Jim Dale's last Carry On appearance for 23 years until his return in Carry On Columbus.

Plot

Dr Nookey (Jim Dale) discovers that he is in love with one of his new, seductive patients named Goldie Locks (Barbara Windsor) at Long Hampton Hospital. With the battle-axe of a Matron (Hattie Jacques) and moody Dr Frederick Carver (Kenneth Williams) on his tail, many troubles and calamities follow him too as feminine Dr Stoppage (Charles Hawtrey) tries to calm down a man-hating patient, Nookey becomes drunk at the dinner party and ends up crashing through a window on a hospital trolley. Goldie then leaves Nookey while Frederick Carver and his dolly bird Ellen Moore (Joan Sims) dispatches the disgraced Dr Nookey to the fictional tropical islands of the fictional Beatific Islands, where he discovers Gladstone Screwer (Sid James), a doctor of the local surgery. There, he finds a weight losing serum and returns to England and opens a new surgery with Mrs Moore, much to the anger of Carver. While Matron, Carvers closest ally joins forces with Nookey, Carver and Stoppage plot to try and steal the serum. While Stoppage dresses as a female patient, his luck runs out when Nookey catches him in the act. Goldie returns to have the serum, and gets it but according to Gladstone, Nookey has the wrong serum. The serum that Nookey has is a sex changing serum! Nookey and Goldie get married and the rest of the Long Hampton Hospital become friends again.

Production notes

The original script for Carry On Again Doctor raised problems with Rank's legal adviser, who felt it was too similar to an unfilmed 'Doctor' script that Talbot Rothwell, writer of Carry On Again Doctor, had previously submitted to producer Betty Box. Most notably, both scenarios featured the medical mission/slimming potion idea. As Box had not taken up the option on Rothwell's 'Doctor' script, however, it was felt there were no legal problems with the use of those ideas in this film.

Cast

Wilfred Brambell's character was a non-speaking cameo in an early scene. When he appeared, the theme from Steptoe and Son was played over his scene.
