CFM International is a joint venture between GE Aviation, a division of General Electric of the United States and Safran Aircraft Engines (formerly known as Snecma), a division of Safran of France. The joint venture was formed to build and support the CFM56 series of turbofan engine.

The names of CFM International and the CFM56 product line are derived from the two parent companies’ commercial engine designations: GE's CF6 and Snecma's M56.

As of June 2016, the CFM56 have more than 550 operators.^[1] As of July 2016, 30,000 engines have been built, CFM plans to produce 1,700 engines in 2016, the highest production rate in the industry.^[2] There are 13,700 engines in backlog.^[3]
