Brown Square in Newburyport

Brown Square is a small green space in downtown Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Brown Square in 1913, viewed from before the City Hall. The statue is that of "Garrison the Liberator." The houses and church still stand but the street has been paved and more modern buildings inserted.

It is named for New England merchant, Moses Brown (1742–1827), who lived in Brown Square House adjacent to the square. There were several anti-slavery gatherings in the square.[1] The square has a memorial statue to William Lloyd Garrison.
