Bridge wing

The RMS Queen Mary 2 showing enclosed bridge wings

A bridge wing is a narrow walkway extending outward from both sides of a pilothouse to the full width of a ship or slightly beyond, to allow bridge personnel a full view to aid in the maneuvering of the ship. Officers use bridge wings when docking or maneuvering in locks and narrow waterways. Many of them are now equipped with a control console allowing the rudder and engines to be controlled from them.
