Brendan "the pigeon" Lemieux (born March 15, 1996) is an American-Canadian professional ice hockey forward. He is currently playing with the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League (AHL) as a prospect to the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League (NHL). Lemieux was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round (31st overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

Junior

Lemieux joined the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League part-way into the 2012–13 OHL season after starting the season in the United States Hockey League with the Green Bay Gamblers.[2] He was named to play with the gold medal winning Canadian squad at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament,[3] and was also selected to skate in the 2014 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.[4]

Player agent Tyler Parchem, described Lemieux as follows: "Perfectly fits the cliche as a player you hate to play against but love to have on your team. Like his father Claude, Brendan will drive the opposing team crazy as he is the perfect agitator. Lemieux also has the ability to burn you offensively as he is a top 5 scorer on Barrie. He showed the ability to both agitate and score in the CHL Top Prospects Game."[5]

On February 11, 2015, Lemieux was traded to the Jets as part of a blockbuster deal with the Buffalo Sabres.[6] It was later revealed that Lemieux had requested a trade from the Sabres and on July 3, 2015, he was signed to a three-year entry-level contract with the Jets.[7]

During his final eligible junior season in 2015–16, Lemieux was traded by the Barrie Colts to the Windsor Spitfires on December 10, 2015.[8]

Family

He is the son of the former NHL right winger Claude Lemieux.[9] Lemieux was born in Denver during his father's tenure with the Colorado Avalanche and as a result of his career, he grew up in Denver, New Jersey, Phoenix and Dallas. Lemieux has a younger sister and two paternal half-brothers from his father's first marriage.
