Founder’s Message

Purpose of Education

Education would fail ignominiously in its objective, if it manufactured only a robot and called him an economic man accenting the adjective ‘economic’ and forgetting the substantive ‘man’. A university cannot afford to ignore the cultural aspects of education, whatever studies it specializes in. Science is a means, not an end, whereas culture is an end in itself. Even though you may ultimately become a computer programmer, a scientist, a doctor, or an engineer, a teacher or a lawyer, you must, while in college, absorb fundamental values which will make, you a man of culture, a fine engineer has not merely to build bridges; he has to be a devoted husband, a kind father, a friendly neighbour, a dutiful citizen, and a man true to himself. He will have trials and tribulations; his heart will fail him at times; he will then need the spiritual strength which true culture alone can give. We aim to achieve a holistic development of personality through education which is in the view of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, both modern and traditional.

K. M. Munshi

Principal’s Message

The College was established in 1946 by Kulapati Dr. K.M.Munshiji as a constituent institution of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, dedicated to Life, Literature and Culture. The College was accredited with a grade of B++, with an institutional Assessment Score of 82% by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Assessment was based on following seven criteria: Curricular Aspects; Teaching-learning and Evaluation; Research, Consultancy and Extension Activities; Infrastructure and Learning Resources; Students Support and Progression; Organization and Management; and Healthy Practices. The assessment was carried out in 2004.

Post-Accreditation period has been a happening period in the College. New Academic Programmes – 3 UG & 3 PG have been added to the bouquet, keeping in mind needs of students who are employed but want to continue their studies, so that they can attend academic sessions in the evenings or weekends. Academic flexibility offered to the socio-economically and culturally diverse profile of students has enriched the learning experience on the campus. Faculty members of the College have been inducted on various academic bodies of other Universities in addition to University of Mumbai, contributing in the development and updating of curricula as well as examination and research.

A heterogeneous group of learners with a wide spectrum of aspirations, aptitude and choices is attracted to the College due to transparent admission procedure adhering to inclusive policy. Remedial / bridge courses and conscious efforts by faculty, internal assessment and project based academics in tune with differential capabilities of learners are synergized with technological tools and pedagogy leading to effective teaching-learning process. Efforts of the staff to enhance their own knowledge and skills, matched with encouragement and support from Management is an ongoing process resulting in a dynamic academic ambience on the Campus. The University of Mumbai has introduced Semester Based credit and Grading System (SBCG) of education with effect from Academic Year 2011- 2012. Timely computerization of processes keeping pace with examination and evaluation reforms has benefited the College to cope up with versatility demanded in the pattern of evaluation in SBCGS as well as with office and accounts administration.

An innovative, NABL accredited Bhavan’s Research Centre, has been established as an extension of Microbiology Department, with the objective of academia-industry networking with an added dimension of entrepreneurship and inputs from SPJIMR (Shriyans Prasad Jain Institute of Management Research) , by our visionary Chairman, Dr. M.L.Shrikant. The centre is encouraged not only in terms of financial and infrastructure support but an untiring personal interest and guidance by the Chairman have resulted in an amazing growth in the BRC and it will definitely reach the Zenith in the near future. After the accreditation of the College by NAAC in 2004, the contribution of faculty and students in areas of research, projects and publications is noteworthy, not just in terms of quantum increase but in terms of its “outcome”, i.e. generating a Research Culture in the College. Apart from the contribution of staff in various academic/administrative processes of the University, the expertise of the College staff leading to consultancy is noteworthy in the fields of Microbiology, Environmental Conservation and Literature. Co-operation of the College, through activities of the NSS and NCC Units also needs to be commended in community service.

The contribution of College staff in following endeavors is noteworthy: Census 2010-2011, Electoral processes of Municipal Corporation as well as assembly, conduct of entrance and competitive examination for Government, Semi Government and Private Corporate agencies. There have been constraints on regular appointments due to ban on appointments from time to time by the Government. A system has been introduced for regular maintenance and upkeep of infrastructure which consists partly of outsourcing and partly of hiring contracts for security, cleanliness, carpentry, plumbing, electrical needs as well as gardening. Optimum utilization of infrastructure through repairs, renovation and restructuring did not suffice the needs of the College. To keep with the growing need to create space, construction of a new building is in progress, which will add the much needed additional space. NABL accredited laboratory for research has been established with investment in terms not only of space but also equipment. An up-to-date collection of books, periodicals and journals in the Library has been enriched with audio-visual resources. Library functions have been computerized with the help of Library Software “Libsys”, supported with barcode technology for the library transactions. Library provides a set of valuable services viz. current contents of journals, “OPAC” list of new additions and other online resources and book bank facility, one dedicated for SC/ST students. Library is now planning to establish digital library and institutional digital repository.

Development of ICT has been an important agenda for the College. In spite of constraints on the budget, College has equipped itself with computers, laptops, LCD projectors, Internet connectivity, CCTV system, Biometric attendance system, Software packages for monitoring students admission to various programmes and fee register, staff pay roll; PF, Income Tax package and Tally. Also available is a copier, reprographic facility, an Identity Card printing machine and sound and amplifier systems. For a heterogeneous profile of students, to contain the dropout rate is a challenge which we have not only successfully met, but a large population of Bhavanites pursues further studies in India as well as abroad. A functional placement cell, counseling activities, NSS and NCC Units, Vanamahotsava (to inculcate respect for plants and environment), Satbhavana Saptah (to re-visit Gandhian virtues of non-violence and truth), Savitribai Phule Jayanti (to empower women), Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Lecture (to further understanding of inclusive policy and affirmative action) Kulapati Memorial Rotating Trophy for Intercollegiate essay and elocution competition; theme based intercollegiate cultural and film festivals honing the organizational skills of the students and provide a platform for showcasing their talents. All these activities create a culturally vibrant campus weaving golden threads of virtues and values in the fabric of College life of students, realizing the maxim of Kulapativani “Creative Education is an Art of Self Sculpture”. Due to the dynamic, versatile and visionary leadership of Chairman Dr. M. L. Shrikant, the Bhavan’s Campus at Andheri has been enriched by bonding and networking between the Sister Institutions on the Campus; opportunities abound for Bhavanites to learn the ancient and the new, to explore international endeavors and yet remain strongly rooted in Indian Culture. Thus Bhavan’s campus at Andheri is truly living up to the Vision of the founder Kulapati Dr. K.M.Munshiji, vision for the Bhavan’s education –Bharatiya Vidya – as nectar ofKnowledge – Amrutam Tu Vidya.
