Beohar Rammanohar Sinha

Beohar Rammanohar Sinha (Hindi: व्यौहार राममनोहर सिंहा, Vyauhar Ram Manohar Simha or Ram da) was an Indian artist who illustrated the preamble page and many other pages of the original constitution of India in 1949.

He signed his works "RAM". RAM was born in Jabalpur^[1] and lived in Santiniketan.

Influences

RAM was a student of one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and a key figure of Contextual Modernism, Nandalal Bose. Beohar Rammanohar Sinha studied at Visva-Bharati University from 1946–51 and then taught art there from 1953–56 and 1959-62.

Works

RAM's most famous works include the illustrations on the preamble page of the 1949 Constitution of India which were endorsed by Nandalal Bose without alteration. Bose, who was responsible for the project, insisted that RAM sign the work "so that future generations are able to recognize, remember and celebrate the artist who ornamented the face of the Constitution of India." ^[2]

RAM produced frescoes on the walls and the dome of Shaheed-Smarak or Martyrs'-Memorial Auditorium in Jabalpur, including one depicting the Quit India Movement (pictured).

Cultural exchange and diplomacy

The Indian government sent RAM to China between 1957 and 1959 to "establish a direct cross-cultural and inter-civilization bridge". While in China networked with great artists and political leaders, which has been created with reducing controversy over the disputed Chinese-India border. RAM also spread Indian art and personally mastered both Chinese painting and lacquar work.^[4]
