Barkindji

Barkandji in 1935

The Barkandji people are an Aboriginal group whose traditional lands are located in the Far West of New South Wales, Australia.[1] Norman Tindale notes that their traditional lands ran along the "Darling River from Wilcannia downstream nearly to Avoca and extend[ed] 20 to 30 miles (30 to 50 km.) on each side of the river."

They named the Darling River, Barka, their self designation Barkindji was therefore people of the Barka River. They used the river for travel on bark canoes and traded with the Wiljakali people.[2]
