Chronology
Predecessor BMW 5 Series (F10)

The BMW 5 Series (codenamed G30) is an upcoming lineup of executive cars by German automaker BMW that will succeed the F10 codenamed 5 Series as the seventh model generation. It will be offered in a saloon, a Touring branded estate (codenamed G31) and a GT branded hatchback body style (codenamed G32). The new BMW 5 Series was unveiled on October 12, 2016.[1]

The 5 Series is based on a modular automobile platform on which the full-size G11 BMW 7 Series luxury car is also built upon. A plug-in hybrid variant, the BMW 530e iPerformance, for the saloon and estate body styles and a range of autonomous advanced driver assistance systems that debuted in the 7 Series are also planned for release.[2]

Specifications

The OKL platform utilises a combination of multiple materials to increase structural rigidity and decrease overall mass. Following the BMW i models, as well as the 7 Series, its technical base is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), magnesium, aluminium and high-strength steel. Improvements to the ride involve the addition of air springs on both the front and rear axle. The front grille is capable of closing and opening its shutters to allow for optimal engine cooling and better aerodynamic flow whenever possible.

The 5 Series is equipped with BMW's sixth generation iDrive vehicle control system, which has been expanded to offer four manual input options, most notably gesture-recognizing controls. The electronic architecture has been upgraded to a 48V system in order to make room for a new number of autonomous advanced driver assistance systems.[1]

530e iPerformance

The plug-in hybrid variant of the new lineup, the BMW 530e iPerformance, is scheduled to be released in Europe in March 2017.[3] BMW introduced the "iPerformance" model designation to all BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles from July 2016.[4] The 530e iPerformance features a 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor powered by 9.4 kWh battery. The expected all-electric range is 45 km (28 mi), under the New European Driving Cycle.[3]

Alpina

Alpina will also create its own performance versions of the 5 Series. Prototypes of saloon and estate variants have been spied at Alpina and BMW facilities and at the Nürburgring Nordschleife as early as July 2016.[5]

The Escape

The BMW 540i M Sport was used in The Escape episode released on October 23, 2016.
