BIT Sindri (formerly known as Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri but now Birsa Institute of Technology, Sindri) is a Government engineering college in Jharkhand, India. BIT has received funding from the World Bank for various of its projects and research.[1]
The placements at BIT Sindri include major companies recruiting from the campus such as TCS,IBM,Tata Steel,JSW etc. Recently Outlook India ranked the college as the 26th best College of India. The alumni of the college are working at both private sector companies as well as the Public sector Units, while some of them have established their own companies. BIT Sindri has an alumni association commonly known as BITSAA. BIT Sindri has produced engineers who are serving all across the globe.[2]
BIT Sindri has recently organized the Golden class reunion[3] of its 64 Batch on 23 November 2014. The institute is controlled administratively by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Jharkhand, Ranchi and academically it is affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag for conducting examinations and awarding degrees. All courses are approved by All India Council of Technical Education and most of the undergraduate programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. The institute is controlled administratively by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Jharkhand, Ranchi and academically it is affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag for conducting examinations and awarding degrees. All courses are approved by All India Council of Technical Education and most of the undergraduate programs are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. The college today offers B.Tech courses in 10 disciplines of engineering namely Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy, Production, Chemical, Electronics & Communications, Civil, Mining, Computer Science, Information technology, having NBA accreditation.

Departments at BIT Sindri:

1.Mechanical:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 1949 when the institute was born. The department offers four years B.Tech degree course with an annual intake of 105 students. Two years postgraduate program is also offered leading to M.Tech degree with specialization in Heat Power Engineering, Machine Design and Production Technology. The annual intake in the postgraduate program is 10.

The department has laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The important laboratories include: Strength of Materials, Applied Mechanics, Heat Engine, Hydraulics, Aerodynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Solar Energy, Tribology, Industrial Engineering Lab etc. The department has a huge workshop consisting of various units like Carpentry, Smithy, Foundry, Machine Shop etc.

2.Electrical:

The Department of Electrical Engineering was started in the year 1949 when the institute was born. The department offers four years B.Tech. degree course with an annual intake of 100 students. Eighteen months postgraduate program is also offered leading to M.Tech. degree with specialization in Control System and Power System. The annual intake in the postgraduate program is 10. The department is also looking after an electrical sub-station and is maintaining a 14 km distribution line of BIT campus.

The department has laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The important laboratories include: Computer Lab, Control System Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Electrical Machines Lab, Instrumentation Lab, Circuit Lab, High Voltage Lab and Electrical Workshop. The prestigious million volt Atkinson High Tension Laboratory of the department is considered as first of its kind in India .

3.Production:

The Department of Production Engineering, first in Asia, was started in the year 1955 with substantial financial assistance coming from TATAs. The intake to the four years B.Tech degree course is 54 and the academic program is multi disciplinary in its approach. The members of the faculty are actively engaged in the R & D work and have large number of publications to their credit.

The department has laboratories including Robotics and Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) laboratory.

The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in the year 1956. The department offers four years BSc(Engg) degree course with an annual intake of 40 students. One and a half year postgraduate program leading to MSc(Engg) with specialization in Petroleum Refinery Engineering and Chemical Plant Engineering, and one-year program leading to Post Graduate Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering are also offered. The annual intake is 7 and 5 in MSc(Engg) and PG Diploma programs respectively. The department also renders consultancy services for tackling technical problems faced by neighboring industries.

The department has several laboratories required for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The specialized laboratories include: Unit Operations Lab, Process Control Lab, Petroleum Refinery Engineering Lab, Plastic Technology Lab, Unit Process Engineering Lab etc.

6.Civil:

The Department of Civil Engineering was started in the year 1957.The department offers UG & PG courses with Soil mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Structural engineering as specialization. The department also offers adequate facilities for R&D work and thus provides a vital impetus in growth of the state. Both undergraduate and postgraduate are trained in computer applications of Civil Engineering and the latest software.The students of the department actively pursue R&D under the guidance of faculty members funded by state government.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started functioning in 1987. The first undergraduate batch rolled out in the year 1991.Currently the department has nearly 167 undergraduate students. Graduates from the department are recruited by both academia and industries. All over the world, ex-students of the Department occupy top positions in both academia and industries.

BIT Sindri is located on 400 acres (1.6 km2) of land in the industrial town of Sindri in Dhanbad district. Each branch has its own building and laboratories and each department has their own libraries and computer facilities.The college has a lush green campus .There are ten engineering departments in the college and each engineering department has its own building.BIT Sindri was the first college in Asia which introduced the course of Production Engineering.It has a wide spread campus of 440 acres.The whole and sole management of the college is done by Government of Jharkhand.A lot of cultural fests are organised in the college campus.In the session of 2014-2015 many celebrities had their performances in the college campus such as'Divya Kumar' and the band'Under Ground Authority'.

Prayaas India

Prayaas India is the shape given to efforts of the students of B.I.T. Sindri, Dhanbad who thought of the humanitarian aspects nurturing in their minds Prayaas India is a Non-Governmental Organisation which came into existence on April 10, 2008, starting with 10 volunteers and 25 children for providing free and quality education to underprivileged children living in slums and villages near college campuses. The management of the organization is handled by BIT Sindri students. Apart from two-hours evening tuitions to more than 500 children, they are admitted in good private schools for formal education.

Placements at BIT Sindri

BIT Sindri, the only government engineering college in the state, made a record of sorts in 2011 when the total number of students securing jobs through campus recruitment crossed the 500 mark. Institute students were delighted when the TCS announced to give annual scholarship of Rs 10,000 to the topper of computer science and engineering branch. In 2010, the total number of students who had secured job through campus placement drive was 468.[4] For 2012 batch students,IT major Tata Consultancy Services offered jobs to 201 students. The students have been offered a salary package of up to Rs 3.8 lakh per annum. But still there is huge Craze of GATE in the Campus and people score well in GATE every year. BIT Sindri welcomes the best recruiters in India and abroad to its campus..

Academic Section: Academic Section of BIT, Sindri is responsible for student's admission, keeping their academic records updated as well as final award of degree to B.Tech., M.Tech. and Research Scholars of Ph.D. It prepares the academic calendar of BIT Sindri and monitors the academic progress. It also prepares and ensures the regular update of academic curriculum and syllabi. Further it is responsible of filling university examination forms and issuing admit cards for the examinations. It also coordinates the institute and university along with the examination section.
