Avant-punk refers to a wave of American punk bands characterized by screeching experimentation.[1] It originated with the rock band the Velvet Underground, who themselves were predicated by the Yardbirds, the early Kinks, and garage band one-shots collected on the Nuggets series of compilation albums.[2]
