Around the World (Beat Ink song)

Around the World is a song concept produced and recorded by local producer Beat Ink between October-December 2007, with releases from January 2008 and onwards. It is the first song that heavily samples (and its melody is almost entirely based on) ATC's Around The World (La La La La La) and uses modern drumbeats. With about 4 or more languages and over 80 recorded versions from various artists in the world, it is the largest and culturally diverse remix version and sampling of Pesenka and ATC's Around the World. Label CD Baby had secured and current owns the rights to the entire song concept, including the original instrumental and all vocal versions.

Background

Beat Ink was the local producer whose only well-known self-produced song is "Around the World", which would see over 80 recorded versions in many parts of the world.

Around the World's sample, ATC's Around The World (La La La La La), was produced and recorded by Alex Christensen sometime in late 1999 at RNT Studios, Sweden and first released on May 9, 2000 and performed well in the European and other charts from 2000 to 2002 (reaching #1 in Germany in Summer 2000), but never entered the charts of other continents of the world, due to ATC's limited popularity. The Eurodance and Trance song, which features vocals from German pop group ATC, is an international cover of (and is based on) Ruki Vverh!'s Pesenka (1998), a Russian Eurodance song. By mid-2003, the song had declined in global popularity due to ATC's disbandment. It would later be used for various covers, remixes and other versions after its release. The song sample spent its early years without being sampled until sometime in 2007. In October-December 2007, unknown local producer Beat Ink started finding various song samples for his concept. After listening to ATC's Around The World (about 7 years after release), he took that sample and used it into his song concept after convincing it. He chose to produce the song concept because the song sample is thought to be 'the best' and people worldwide (including 'ATC' and 'Around The World' fans) enjoyed listening to it a lot since its release in 2000. Then, he finalized what would be the first ever hip-hop/rap version of ATC's Around The World (and he named that song after the ATC song of the same name excluding 5 La's) and shared it to other producers and artists who opted to record their version of that song. Siren Sirezze was one of first artists to record his version in December 2007 before his song's release. The first version of Beat Ink's Around the World was first released on MySpace on January 1, 2008^[1] and on YouTube on June 17, 2008.^[2] The song concept also spanned several versions from The Emsee, Chris Webby, 89 Enterprizement, Oregonized and more artists from parts of the world.

Composition

Around the World is a remix song concept convinced and produced by local producer Beat Ink in late 2007. It features the sample of ATC's Around The World (La La La La La) (2000), in which its melody is based on. The low-pitch and slow tempo variant of the sample could be heard since its release on May 9, 2000, and it can be heard or used via audio editing software today. During production of his song concept, Beat Ink slowed down the sample to 0.7274x or -27.26% from ATC's original speed, mixed up some melody loop parts and used his rare and unique modern drum kit, running at 96 beats per minute. The sample is used into intro, melody, chorus and mid-song elements. The low-pitched vocals of ATC are heard in intro, chorus and outro elements of the sample as its original version. The drum beats used by Beat Ink are heard from the time marks of 0:25 to 3:25 (3 minutes). Beat Ink's Around the World, in its final version, features a 25-second intro, 3 40-second verses, 3 20-second choruses and a 21-second outro for the total length of 3 minutes and 46 seconds. The song concept starts with a fade-in intro, goes to the verse followed by the chorus, then 2 more same verse-chorus parts follow and goes to a fade-out outro before the end. The song's lyrical content varies depending on any artist who recorded their vocals on it. The song concept's overall production matched the style of 1990s to 2000s hip-hop music.

Around the World saw releases of all its versions on MySpace, YouTube and more spanning from January 2008 and onwards. The song was recorded and is performed in over 80 versions (or up to as high as 100 versions) and about 4 languages: English, French, Spanish and German. While half of the versions are performed by artists from United States, other artists who performed in the latter half come from Canada, France, Germany and other parts of the world, making it the largest and culturally diverse song concept ever recorded. All versions are rare to find, but can be seen and heard on YouTube, Soundclick, Reverbnation and MySpace. There are collective mixes featuring all versions of Around the World.^[3][4][5]

Some artists in some versions of the song used some lyrics about geography, travel and tourism, in connection with its title name. While the ATC version only appeared in Europe, Australia and North America, the Beat Ink concept is spread to other parts of the world thanks to some diverse artists from there. Miscellaneous

There is a restored version of the original instrumental song with Beat Ink's original drumbeats and no vocals or sound effects.^[19] According to YouTube, CD Baby currently owns the rights to the song concept. The reason for that is because of the song's musical composition; its emphasis is most likely the sampled melody, based on the ATC version, and additionally the Beat Ink-used drumbeats and/or the vocal recordings.

Similarities/differences between ATC and Beat Ink versions of Around the World:

• ATC version is of Eurodance genre and has a fast tempo, while the Beat Ink one is of hip-hop genre and has a slower tempo.
• The Beat Ink concept, in its instrumental and all versions, allows more empty/record-able verses (3 in total) than the ATC version.
• The song's melody (which is its emphasis) has almost the same sound as the ATC version, but it goes in a low-pitch and slow-tempo form.
• The song concept has its strong, rare and unique drumbeat kit and some mixed melody parts not found in the ATC version or its other remixes or samplings.

The pros/hits of the song Around the World are:

• Beat Ink successfully sampled the ATC version for his song concept without facing copyright issues from the sample's owners/labels (as the band ATC no longer exists). He was the first to slow down the sample, in which its low-pitch and slow-tempo variant had no signs of copyright yet. The song was not copyrighted until 3 artists, The Emsee, 89 Enterprizement and Oregonized had the label CD Baby to secure the ownership rights to the song before release of their versions. Chris Webby or some other artists did not copyright their versions because CD Baby did that for them.
• Because the song is of hip-hop genre, the lyrical element of all versions focuses almost entirely on rapping, while a few versions have some singing elements.
• Even if heard and known, the song would be the most perfect and superior of all remixes and samplings of Ruki Vverh's Pesenka and ATC's Around the World.
• The vocal recording of this song is male-dominated (95-99% of vocals from all versions are from all male artists), with the lyrics of most versions using mature content and/or strong language.
• The song was recorded in over 80 (or up to as high as 100) versions and over 4 languages by artists from select parts of the world (About 50% of them are from the United States), making it larger and more diverse than that of the ATC version.
• The lyrics of all versions are vastly diverse and address certain topics such as travel and tourism, personal life, sociopolitical issues, crime life, various cultures and more.
• The only most popular version of this song is Chris Webby's La La La, which has now about 13-16 million views in all its videos on YouTube. The rest of all versions remain either independent or underground from the public.

The cons/misses of that song are:

• The band ATC was never involved in this remix concept and/or other samplings/versions due to its disbandment in 2003.
• The song concept never matched the impact and success of its sample because it was deemed underground and unknown at time of its release.
• The original instrumental was never released to the public worldwide as it is considered ultra rare and difficult to find (only CD Baby hold the rights to it as well as vocal versions). The reason for that was because Beat Ink chose to keep his song a secret and only shared it to other artists who opted to recorded their vocals to that song.
• Unlike the ATC version, the song never entered any major global chart after its release.
• Despite that the ATC version had only female lead vocals (even in slow-speed variant) and the word 'girl' or 'lady' was mentioned in most versions, the song was never recorded by any female lead artist in the world because it's male-dominated.
• As of now, there are more people in the world who know the ATC version better than the Beat Ink concept, making the song still unknown to the public.
• The song was never officially remixed or remade by any other producer.
• Despite that some countries such as Japan, Singapore, Egypt, Iran, Colombia and more were mentioned in lyrics of some versions, the song was never recorded by artists from those countries. Also, some native languages were never used in any version of the song concept.
• Although the vocals of ATC are heard in some elements, almost none of the verse lyrics of all versions matched the same ones as the ATC version (only Chris Webby sings the vocables in his version).
• There was never an official music video of the song concept planned and made (unlike the sample), although some versions had it unofficially.
• The song was never performed or exhibited in live concerts worldwide (only Chris Webby performs his version in his select live concerts).
• Both original artists of Around the World, ATC and Beat Ink, had left the music scene soon after at different times, therefore both versions are independent songs now.

Overall, the song concept could be given a rating between 6 and 8 out of 10, depending on how well you know that song.
