The Army Black Knights are a collegiate inline hockey team based in West Point, New York. The Black Knights represent the United States Military Academy and are a recognized club sport. Currently the Black Knights are governed by the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association. The Black Knights compete in the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (ECRHA) at the Division I level. As of 2012, the team has shifted from roller hockey to club ice hockey. The team joined the ACHA as division 2 team and currently competes as an independent.

Franchise history

The Black Knights began as an informal collection of inline skaters playing in Central and North areas in 1999 using big yellow laundry carts for goals. This loosely organized group eventually coagulated into a formal club in 2000 after receiving founding support from then LTC Kathleen Snook (the original OIC) and ultimately the blessing of then Commandant of Cadets, BG Eric T. Olsen. Without the freedom or funding to enter league play, the early team competed in a handful of loosely organized intercollegiate roller hockey tournaments across the northeast using hand-me-down ice hockey jerseys. The first of these events was a 4-team invitational in October 2000 in Corning, NY.

From their early starts the Black Knights grew and evolved to play in the 2002–2003 season as members of the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (ECRHA). Bryan Dougherty pushed the club forward with the goal of competing in the NCRHA and extending the physical program at the military academy into the realm of roller hockey. The Black Knights have struggled to gain legitimacy as a club team at the academy, but in the 2006–2007 season fared well enough to travel to Key West for the Winterfest where they were the runner-up. While they have a team-best record of 7-15-1, and an overall record of 12-64-1, the Army Black Knights have continued to improve with every game and have demonstrated their potential with a 4-3 win over the DI regional runner-ups SUNY Buffalo in 2007. In their first season at the Division I level, the Black Knights skated to a 4-1 victory over Drexel, one of the top teams in DII, and lost a nail-biter to DII champions Stony Brook. They also finished ahead of conference rivals Boston University and Northeastern at the end of the regular season.

In 2012-2013, the West Point club hockey team transitioned to an on-ice team, playing an abbreviated schedule in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The following season, 2013-2014, the club continued its ACHA campaign at the Division II level, finishing the season with a record of 11-1 versus Division II competition. The squad won the Service Leaders of Tomorrow tournament, competing against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The 2014-2015 West Point Club Hockey team carries a record of 16-2 against ACHA Division II competition (18-6 overall record).
