She was born in Paris in 1955 to Chinese parents,[3] academic François Cheng and a painter.[4] Anne Cheng attended the École Normale Supérieure and then taught and did research on sinology for the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), and the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO). She received appointments to positions to the Institut universitaire de France and then the Collège de France.[3]
