Annabella Gloria Philomena Sciorra[2] (/ˈʃrə/, SHOH-rə; born March 29, 1960)[2][3][4] is an American actress.[5] Her film roles include Cadillac Man (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), Cop Land (1997) and What Dreams May Come (1998). She was nominated for a 2001 Emmy Award for playing Gloria Trillo in The Sopranos (2001–04).

Early life

Sciorra was born in Brooklyn, New York,[1][2] to a housewife mother and a veterinarian father.[6] Her parents are Italian American,[7] and her father emigrated from Carunchio, Abruzzo in 1951.[8] Sciorra studied dance as a child, and as she grew older, began taking drama lessons at Herbert Berghof Studio and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.[9]


On November 5, 1981, Sciorra founded the Brass Ring Theater Company at the age of 21.[2] She received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead for the 1989 film True Love,[10] and came to widespread attention in her co-lead role in Spike Lee's 1991 film Jungle Fever. She starred in the 1992 thriller The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,[11] and received critical acclaim for her work in Cop Land.[12] She received an Emmy nomination for her role as Gloria Trillo in the HBO series The Sopranos.[12] From 2005 to 2006, she portrayed Detective Carolyn Barek on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Personal life

Sciorra was married to actor Joe Petruzzi from 1989 to 1993.[13][14][15]
