The American School of Bombay (or ASB) is a co-educational, international, day school in Mumbai, India.

Educational program/curriculum

The American School of Bombay follows a college preparatory program that culminates with an American high school diploma (ASB Diploma) or the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma).

Special programs

Specialist teachers are provided for grades ECEC (Early Childhood Education Center) through grade 12. The school has two campuses for both elementary and secondary schools. The SSC (secondary school) campus is in Bandra Kurla Complex, while the ESC (elementary school) campus is located in Kohinoor City. The school also offers after-school activities (ASA). The athletics program includes track and field, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, netball, badminton, and swimming. ASB participates in SAISA (South Asia International School Association), ASIAC (American Schools in India Activity Conference) music festivals, choral festivals, Model United Nations (MUN) and the International School Theater Association (ISTA).

Educational technology

In the middle and high school all students in grades 6-12 use laptops as a tool to support and enhance their learning throughout the curriculum. The facilities include a campus-wide wireless network. The one-to-one program in the Elementary School provides access in a 1-to-1 laptop ratio for grades 3-5 and an appropriate student-to-laptop ratio for ECEC to grade 2. The school uses a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) plan so that children can bring their own technology to school.

History

In 1981, a group of international parents started the American School of Bombay with 12 students in a room at the American Consulate. The idea was to offer an educational program that would help students make an easy transition from one international school to another. As the school grew, it moved from the American Consulate to nearby residential apartments. In November 1998, the school moved to its current campus in Bandra, a Mumbai suburb. The school celebrated its 35 year anniversary in 2016.

Governance

ASB is operated on a non-profit basis by the American School of Bombay Education Trust set up under the terms and conditions laid down by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees, elected by the parents and faculty, for a two-year term.

Accreditation

Switzerland: International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), Primary Years Program and Diploma Program; USA: Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA)
