It was founded in 1926 under the name Provincial Institute of Technology and Arts, which was under the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (now SAIT Polytechnic). As a college, the institution had the authority to grant certificates and diplomas. In 1995 the Alberta Government authorized the granting the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts[3] and in 2000 gave authority to grant a Bachelor of Design degree.[3]
