Akhtar Raza Khan also known as Azhari Miyan and Famous as "TAAJUSH SHARIAH"(Crown Of Shariah) [2] is an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar and Mufti.[3] He is a descendant (great-grandson) of Ahmed Raza Khan, founder of Barelvi movement.[4] He is considered by Sunni-Barelvi Muslims,i.e.,a large portion of Indian Sunni Muslims,[5] as the Grand Mufti of India.[1][6] His name is placed on the 22nd position in the list of The 500 Most Influential Muslims across the world (2014–15 edition), compiled by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre.[1][7][8][9][10][11]
Education
Akhtar Raza Khan obtained his basic Qur'anic knowledge like recitation from his mother. He received basic traditional education at Manzar-e-Islam (in Bareilly). At the age of twenty he went to Al-Azhar University where he studied tafsir and hadith for three years from 1963 C.E. to1966 C.E. Upon his graduation, he was awarded the Jamia Azhar Award.[1][8]
Jamiatur Raza
In the year of 2000 he founded an Islamic seminary Centre of Islamic Studies Jamiatur Raza based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India.[8][12][13]
As an Islamic poet
Apart from being a Mufti, he is also a poet. He wrote many Islamic poems (Na`at, Hamd etc). His composition of Na`at is entitled Safina Bakhshish, written in three different languages.[14]
Fatwas (judicial verdicts)
One of his famous fatwas is his edict on the interest given to a Muslim by a non-Muslim:
"When there is a dealing between a Muslim and a Muslim or a Muslim and a Zimmi Kaffir (a non-Muslim living in the safety of an Islamic state), the taking more money then loaned is considered as interest and such a dealing will be unlawful. However, if this condition does not exist, this excess money will not be considered as interest and will be legitimate for a Muslim as it is unanimous that there is no interest applicable when there is dealing between a Muslim and a Harbi Kaafir (a non-Muslim who is not living in the safety of an Islamic State)." He issues fatwa from Markazi Dar al-Ifta, at Jamiatur Raza, Bareilly.
Fatwa Collection (Azharul Fatawa)
His Urdu language Fatwa collection is known as Majmu'ah Fatawa. The collection of his fatawa in English language is named Azharul Fatawa. The type of questions answered in the book are in relation to the Muslim communities living in Western countries because most of the Fatawa were issued in South Africa.[15]
