Agnes Loretta Brown^[1][2] is the protagonist in the BBC comedy series Mrs. Brown's Boys.

Background

Agnes was born on 1 September 1940. Her younger sister, Dolly, was born two years later. Growing up, her family was poor; it was a four-mile walk to school and five to the nearest shop. She met her future husband, Nicholas "Redser" Brown, when she and her childhood friend Winnie attended a birthday party for Sadie Brady. Their marriage was hastened; just after the pair said 'I do', Agnes's waters broke; their eldest child, Mark, was born a few hours later.

Straight-to-Video film series

A series of seven Direct to home media films were made between 2002–08. The films plots contain many of the same stories as other Mrs. Brown incarnations and many of the same cast went on to the television series.

Television series

In the television series, Agnes Brown is a widow and lives in her house at 92, James Larkin Court, Finglas, Dublin, with three of her six children (her 96 year old father-in-law, Harold Brown, better known as Granddad). Daughter Cathy is a sexually-frustrated woman who can't find the right man; Rory is a homosexual who works in the hairdressers and Dermot works as a promoter, which involves walking around Dublin dressed in various costumes. Her eldest son Mark lives with his wife, voluptuous Betty, and their son, the sweet and innocent Bono (her favourite relative). Her youngest, Trevor, is away on the missions in Africa. Although she has mentioned having six children on several occasions, the sixth child, a fifth son of Agnes's, has yet to be seen on the show. Her best friend and neighbor, the kind but dimwitted Winnie McGoogan, is constantly popping around for cups of tea, and the local priest (Father Quinn, later replaced by Father Damian, after the former suffers an alcohol problem) is constantly popping around for varying reasons. She spends her evenings down at Foley's, the local pub, with Winnie, Cathy and her daughters-in-law Betty and Maria (who's married to Dermot and mother of their triplets, John, George and Ringo (all named after the Beatles)). She has a strong dislike for Hilary Nicholson, Maria's snobbish mother. She also has a strong dislike for Dermot's shady lifelong friend, Buster Brady, who often tries to embroil Dermot in get-rich-quick schemes.

Film

On 27 June 2014, a film was released under the title of Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie. In the film, Agnes finds a ruthless Russian businessman plans to close down the Moore Street Market (where she works, selling fruit and vegetables) and replace it with a shopping centre. The Moore Street Market stallholders decide to fight back, and Agnes and her family and friends also get embroiled.
