Aegilia (island)

Aegilia or Aegileia (Greek Αιγλείην) is a small island in the bay of Styra, which is on the south-western coast of Euboea, Greece. Aegilia lies directly across from the bay of Marathon, Greece about eight miles away.

History

Herodotus writes that during the First Persian invasion of Greece (492-490 BCE), the captives from the Siege of Eretria were kept on Aegilia (which belonged to Styra) during the Battle of Marathon (490 BCE).[1] After the battle, these captives were picked up,[2] and eventually sent to Darius I in Susa, Persia.[3]
