Adult Swim in the UK and Ireland is a late night programming block broadcast on Fox and TruTV.[1] Featuring programmes such as Robot Chicken, Metalocalypse, Rick and Morty, The Venture Bros and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Adult Swim also has a website and a mobile TV service which is run separately from its sister channel, Cartoon Network.

History

In the United States, Adult Swim fills the overnight broadcast time of the Cartoon Network cable channel, and features a mix of original and syndicated programming geared towards an 18+ audience.

In the UK, channels like Cartoon Network are considered to be children's channels, and are prevented under the Ofcom broadcasting code from airing content unsuitable for children at any time of day, even after the traditional 21:00 watershed.

As a result, many of Adult Swim's original programmes have been aired in the UK on channels aimed at older audiences, often in designated "Adult Swim" branded blocks. In the past such blocks have aired on channels such as Bravo, FX, Syfy and TCM 2, before eventually moving to Fox in 2015.

Shows previously screened as part of Adult Swim blocks on other channels include Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, Tom Goes to the Mayor, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Venture Bros., Moral Orel, and Metalocalypse.[2] Non-Williams Street produced shows on the block include Stripperella and Kid Notorious. The first "action" series was the anime Afro Samurai, which aired on 4 May 2007, alongside a new UK animated show Modern Toss originally made for Channel 4. Adult Swim ceased to broadcast on Bravo on 7 July 2008.[3]

FX broadcast Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum, Venture Brothers and Metalocalypse, as part of an [adult swim] branded block, which ran between 5 June 2010 and 27 November 2010.

From 4 January 2012, Adult Swim began a one-hour weekly broadcast on Turner's TCM 2 channel, marking the first time that Adult Swim has aired on one of Turner's own channels in the UK and Ireland. The programming block ended in August 2013, following the closure of TCM 2.

Adult Swim returned to UK and Irish television starting with a new block on the Fox channel on 4 September 2015.[4]

Adult Swim began airing on TruTV in late 2016 on Mondays and Fridays, in addition to Fox, in an attempt to make the Adult Swim programming more available to Freeview users.[5]

Online & DVD

The UK/Ireland Adult Swim website, like its American counterpart, offers free access to full episodes of shows including Squidbillies, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Tom Goes to the Mayor, Minoriteam, Stroker and Hoop, Moral Orel, 12 oz. Mouse, Perfect Hair Forever, Metalocalypse, and Frisky Dingo. As of Wednesday 11 July 2012, the Adult Swim UK site started redirecting visitors to the US site. However, it has been redesigned and is online, showing a YouTube clip of the show Rick and Morty, their social media sites and their TV guide for the UK.[6]

Revolver Entertainment recently began distributing some original Adult Swim series on DVD in the UK and Ireland.[7]
