"A Stereotypical Day" is the second episode of the eighth season of the American sitcom Modern Family. It aired on September 28, 2016 on American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The premiere is directed by Ryan Case and written by Stephen Levitan.

Plot

Alex (Ariel Winter) got the mono during summer vacation. Haley (Sarah Hyland), and Luke (Nolan Gould) try to use her ad their advantages. Haley got fired but hides it to their parents while Luke wants Alex’s laptop in order to steal all her homework. Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) also try to use Alex’s mono. Claire wants Alex to be the boring member of the family so she can be fun and Phil had a traumatic experience after he accidentally locked himself in a closet during 18 hours while having an open door day. Alex finally breaks down and wants to go back to Caltech, much to her sister’s disappointment as she reveals to Claire and Phil that Haley got fired.

Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) learn that Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) made a new friend, Tom, a transgenre. She calls him a weirdo, which lead them to visit Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofía Vergara) who teach them a lesson about tolerance. They later realize that they’re also judgmental parents and that Lilly protected them after Tom called them Weird Dads.

Manny (Rico Rodriguez wants to be a communist so he can please a girl he met during the wedding and Joe (Jeremy Maguire) decides to leave outdoor . Jay has an another problem. He decided to put videocameras in his garden but on the same day, an African American Family moves in in the house opposite his. Not wanting to be a racist, Jay tries to show them his open mind side, only to be rassured by his new neighbor Shawn.
