2011 Nanchang mass suicide protest

The 2011 Nanchang mass suicide protest (南昌大桥百人自杀事件) occurred in Nanchang, Jiangxi, People's Republic of China on August 4, 2011.[1]

Incident

Communist party high court official Guo Bing (郭兵) was known to have used his power to build an interest group and misused public funds worth millions of yuan for his own gains. No one dared to investigate him.[1] On August 4 hundreds of citizens, ranging from 100 to 500 depending on source, tried to commit mass suicides by jumping off Nanchang bridge to expose the corruption.[2][3] Hundreds of local citizens did not receive any pay for five years due to the corruption.[1] But according to state-run investigations on August 6, no one has jumped off the bridge,[4] and two people, Mr Jiang (蔣) and his son were responsible for spreading the false suicide news.[5]
