This was the second year of that series. The NHK Trophy is an international, senior-level figure skating competition. Elite figure skaters compete in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.

In 1996, the NHK Trophy was held in Osaka, Japan from December 5 through 8. Skaters who placed high enough in this competition earned points towards competing in the 1996–97 Champions Series Final.
