The 35th Cannes Film Festival was held on May 14–26. The Palme d'Or was jointly awarded to Missing by Costa Gavras and Yol by Şerif Gören and Yılmaz Güney.[3][4]

The festival opened with Intolerance, directed by D. W. Griffith and closed with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, directed by Steven Spielberg.[5][6][7][8]
