The television coverage by BBC had been extended to eight days after the success of other competitions such as the World Championship.

Steve Davis took his first major title after making his first major quarter-final the previous year. He whitewashed Terry Griffiths 9–0 in the semi-final and defeated Alex Higgins 16–6 in the final to claim the start of the Davis era in snooker. The highest break of the tournament was 134 made by Higgins.
