Robert Browning (died 1889)
- June 8 – English poet and Jesuit priest Gerard Manley Hopkins dies aged 54 in Dublin of typhoid; he is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery; most of his poetry remains unpublished until 1918.
- December 12 – English poet Robert Browning dies aged 77 at Ca' Rezzonico in Venice on the same day his book Asolando; Fancies and facts is published;[1] he is buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey; Alfred, Lord Tennyson will be buried adjacently.
